The European Commission has published its seventh annual Rule of Law Report, assessing the state of the rule of law in all EU Member States, as well as in four candidate countries: Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia. Among this year’s key findings is the progress made by Member States in aligning their national legislation with the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA). Several countries are implementing reforms aimed at strengthening the independence and sustainable financing of public service media, while also enhancing the fairness and transparency of state advertising allocation. Many Member States are taking concrete steps to address the phenomenon of Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (the so-called SLAPPs), and the Commission continues working with them to support the transposition and implementation of the anti-SLAPP Directive.
